Colours of Colombia | Travel Weekly

 FOOD
Just try to be unhappy in a country that sanctions churros - long fried donuts - for breakfast. Better still, you can knock it back with what is arguably the best coffee in the world. Sourced from lush enclave plantations found all over the country, this coffee has a vibrancy that can only come from a local product. A great tip is to grab a tiny cup of burly coffee called tintos from street vendors who resourcefully pour them out of thermoses.
Empanadas are must-taste speciality. Different to their Spanish or Brazilian cousins, the fried crescent pastries are filled with meat or potato and served with spicy sauce or a lime wedge. Arepas is Colombia's answer to bread and is served with most meals. The flat dough is sold from street vendors and often comes served with cheese.
Colombians have a collective sweet tooth. They like to mix cheese with sugar and a fine example is arepas served with cheese and condensed milk. An even wackier combination is a bowl of hot chocolate served with a side hunk of cheese. This duo redeems itself when you discover that the hot chocolate contains no sugar and as such is more savoury in character. An obleas Colombiana is a large round wafer sold kerb-side and if you ask for one with the lot be prepared to eat a wafer sandwich of caramel and cheese.
To wash it down, try aguapanela which translates to a teeth-aching sugar cane water. If you need something stronger, aguardiente is a liquorice flavoured tipple that locals say is unlikely to trigger a hangover, another notch on the happy meter. There is a hangover cure in the culinary arsenal just in case - changua, which is literally poached eggs cooked in milk and water and served as a soup for breakfast. They're also a creative country, soaking and roasting large ants which apparently ratchet up your sex drive.
BEAUTY
Besides their happiness quotient, Colombians are renowned for being among the most beautiful on the planet. Take a leaf out of their beauty regimen by travelling one hour from Cartagena. Here you will find a mud bath so dense that your feet will not touch the bottom. Instead you will be suspended above the thick gloop and the male attendants will give you a mud massage or take a photo for you, for a small fee.
Beyond the locals, there is a wealth of good-looking wildlife. This nation has one of the highest levels of biodiversity anywhere in the world - rating second only behind Brazil. You can explore nature's blessing, contrarily enough, in the hectic city of Bogota at the botanical garden of Jose Celestino Mutis, which is a sanctuary for butterflies, orchids and tropical plants. Colombia is home to more than 25,000 butterfly species, and if the bright wings of the life-short beauties don't captivate you, there's dozens of native hummingbirds to catch your eye.
Colombia has access to not one but two epic oceans - the Pacific and the Atlantic. It's also home to a wide desert, the mountains of the Andes, as well as the earth's oxygenating Amazon. Situated near the equator, the weather is warm and sunny year-round, unless you decide to trek to the mountains, where there is no reliability in weather. And for a visual spectacle, visit Cano Cristales, a rainbow river near Macarena (not to be confused with the dance, this one is a town). This waterway looks like a science experiment - in summer the water levels dip and the sun grows algae blooms to shades of red, orange and pink below the surface.
CULTURE
Cartagena is the quintessential fairytale city, like Europe transplanted into a warm and happy Latin quarter. Cobbled lanes, ornate churches and plazas made for daydreams are set off by purple bougainvillea and even more colourful locals. The bright paint has peeled and paled to pastel thanks to the searing sun. Gabriel Garcia Marquez based his magical realist novel Love in the time of cholera on the characters he got to know as a journalist in this extrovert of a city.
Botero is another one of Colombia's famous exports - he is an artist who specialises in chubby statues. His sculpture style is immediately recognisable with horses, women, men and children all wider than they are tall. The artist also has a collection of his own, the Botero Museum in Bogota, Colombia's former crime riddled capital. It displays works by Monet, Picasso and Renoir as well as Botero's exaggerated shapes.
If it's all getting a bit heavy, you're in the right place to shake it out. Colombians have a dedicated word to describe late night carousing which sounds as fun as it actually is. Rumbear means to go out and party, dance and play music. It's a wise move to take a nap before going out at midnight for dancing until dawn. If you're no night owl, Colombians know how to throw a great daytime party, hosting the world's largest salsa festival as well as the biggest flower parade. Then again, who needs an excuse.

Why go? An easy couple of hours' drive from Sydney, the laid-back coastal village of Avoca Beach on the central coast is all about good old-fashioned family fun in the sun, with sandy surf beaches and a sheltered lagoon that's perfect for splashing about in the shallows.
What it's known for Avoca Beach is most well known for the beach it's named after, a two-kilometre golden stretch of sand book-ended by rocky headlands and flanked by a grassy foreshore and Bulbararing Lagoon and Avoca Lake, and no family holiday is considered complete without a couple of hours spent exploring the lake on an aquabike or pedal boat.
But it's not the only good beach in the area: fashionable Terrigal, with its boutiques and cafes, is the next beach to the north and local surfing favourites Copacabana and Macmasters Beach are a short distance to the south.
What you didn't know ... The waters off Avoca Beach are home to one of the only military dive sites in NSW, the sunken naval warship HMAS Adelaide. The 138-metre naval frigate, which served from 1980 until January 2008 in the Gulf War and East Timor, was scuttled in April 2011 and rests on the seabed in about 32 metres of water 1.8 kilometres off the beach.
Unlike most wrecks, which can be difficult to access, diver holes were strategically placed throughout the vessel before it was sunk to allow for greater exploration, and it is open to divers of all levels. Highlights include the captain's chair, helicopter hangars, bunk rooms and the operations room with weapon shells. To book a dive seehmasadelaide.com.
What's new The annual 5 Lands Walk Festival (around the winter solstice in June) has been a popular cultural event for the past seven years, with thousands of people walking from MacMasters Beach in the south to Terrigal in the north via Copacabana and Avoca.
Work is under way on a permanent pathway so you can do the walk on your own at any time of the year: interpretive signs have just been completed. A highlight is the Captain Cook Lookout on the headland between Avoca and Copacabana: on a good day you can see south down the coast to Sydney and north to Terrigal.
During whale season (June/July and October/November) it's a good place to watch whales. If you don't fancy the walk, you can drive to the lookout: follow the road up to the headland from Copacabana Beach (Del Monte Place).5landswalk.com.au.
Don't miss Catch an indie film at the historic Avoca Beach Picture Theatre. This family-run beachside cinema was built in 1951 and is fabulously retro, without trying. The foyer is covered in vintage movie posters, memorabilia and antiques, the snack bar is fully licensed, and as well as screening the latest blockbusters it also has live theatre and music, film festivals, French and Italian nights, and a great selection of arthouse and documentary films. It's worth going for the hot chocolate alone. You'll find it at 69 Avoca Drive. avocabeachpicturetheatre.com.au.
Where to eat For breakfast or lunch with a killer view you can't go past Point Cafe Avoca, underneath the Avoca Beach Surf Life Saving Club. Fish and chips is the go here, although the barbecued duck pancakes and wagyu beef burger are also excellent. It's open daily from 7am to about 3.30pm. pointcafe.com.au.
Rojo Rocket does good authentic Mexican food with tacos and tapas on Wednesday and Thursday nights and a full a la carte menu on Friday and Saturday nights. 366 Avoca Drive, (02) 4382 2255, rojorocket.com.au.
For something special go to Manfredi at Bells at Killcare boutique hotel in Killcare, about 15 kilometres to the south. It's open for dinner daily and lunch Friday to Sunday, but book well ahead. (02) 4349 7000,bellsatkillcare.com.au
Where to stay Avoca Palms Resort Apartments sits atop a row of shops on Avoca Drive in the village centre. Each apartment has a view of either the lake or the beach, and there is a choice of two or three bedrooms or a four-bedroom penthouse. Facilities include a pool, sauna, gym and games room. Rates start at $196 a night midweek, minimum two-night stay. avocapalmsresort.com.au.
For those on a budget, Palms at Avoca has two-bedroom self-contained cabins starting at $160.palmsavoca.com.au.
How to get there Avoca Beach is 90 kilometres north of Sydney, via the F3 Freeway and Central Coast Highway.

Ghana airports adopt biometric border management system

Ghana Immigration Services (GIS) is implementing an electronic visa and border management solution, which will enhance security at airports across the country in response to rapidly escalating cross-border travel in the region. The initiative is part of the eGhana project, an ambitious programme with backing from the World Bank to create a modern IT infrastructure that can support the country’s sustainable development plans in the years ahead.
GIS has appointed Gemalto, a leading provider of digital security services, as primary contractor and turnkey supplier to provide a centralised electronic visa and border control solution powered by biometrics. The e-Immigration solution is expected to promote and improve intelligence sharing between GIS officials and other security agencies. In a single click, GIS agents will be able to supervise automated passport inspection and track border crossing events using data captured by the system.
The solutions will be deployed at Ghana’s main ports of arrival, where a fully computerised system for the processing and issuing of visa and permit applications through biometric technology will be implemented. The project also covers the set up of an online portal service for visa application, and the implementation of electronic gates at Accra’s Kotoka International Airport, for rapid, convenient and automated border control of arrivals and departures.

Arik Partners Sierra Leone to Establish National Carrier

Nigeria’s biggest carrier, Arik Air is providing technical support to the government of Sierra Leone to establish a national carrier, known as Leone Airways.
The new airline, which may start operation in June this year will have all the appurtenances of a national airline and will be operating international, regional and local destinations as it is already designated to be flying to London from Freetown.
Arik Air will provide the airline its initial fleet and technical skills until it is able to acquire its own fleet.
Chairman of Arik Air, Joseph Arumemi-Ikhide, who confirmed this development said that it was also partnering with the Republic of Cote d’Ivoire to also build its own national airline and develop its routes in the West and Central Africa.
“There is Leon Airways that is starting. We are technical partners to Leon Airways and we will be flying from Freetown to London. Of course they too will be flying to some of the West Africa destinations. We are having serious discussion with Air Cote d’Ivoire as partners. So while we are not making a lot of success in Nigeria because we are not getting a lot of support and recognition, others appreciate what we are doing.
“We are aware that in some of these countries Emirates has offered to come and operate there and they said no. They would prefer to have a Nigerian carrier, whereas in Nigeria we are the ones inviting these foreign airlines for peanuts and we say we want to create jobs when all the jobs that could be provided by these airlines is to have one indigenous station manager.”
These partnerships with two West African countries will strengthen the dominance of Arik Air in West and Central Africa sub regions and this will also tilt the jostling for the West African market to its favour as each of these countries would determine the airlines that operate their routes to other destinations.
Since the last three years airlines like Asky, a subsidiary of Ethiopian Airways, Kenya Airways, Rwand Air and others from outside the sub region have been making efforts to have a chunk of the market but the competition has remained stiff.
Before its demise, Air Nigeria used to dominate the West and Central Africa routes but since its extinction, Asky has been making efforts to have a foothold, but ironically the dominant passengers in the market are Nigerians who constitute over 65 per cent of the movements.
Industry experts say that West Africa market seemed to be an open market because almost all the countries in the sub-region do not have a national carrier or dominant private airlines and until the establishment of such airlines as the now defunct Air Nigeria, Arik Air and Aero Contractors, it used to take days to travel by air from one West African country to another, as passengers had to travel to Europe first to connect flights to their neighbouring countries.
This was caused by the death of such airlines as Air Afrique, Nigeria Airways Limited, Ghana Airways, Cameroon Airlines and others.

China to open disputed islands to tourism - CNN.com

Hong Kong (CNN) -- Sightseeing cruises to China's newest city, Sansha, located on a disputed island in the South China Sea, are set to commence this month, according to a Chinese official.
The move is certain to add to the dispute over sovereignty claims to the area.
Woody Island, known as Yongxing Island in Chinese, has a population of about a thousand, including military personnel. It's located 300 kilometers southeast of Hainan and was established as China's latest prefecture in June 2012.
The city of Sansha has the smallest land area, but the largest sea area in China.

Sansha's government has been set up to administer the Spratly Islands (Nansha Islands), the Macclesfield Bank (Zhongsha Islands) and the Paracel Islands (Xisha Islands), which include Woody Island.
The islands are partly claimed by Vietnam, Malaysia, the Philippines, Brunei and Taiwan.
Shown in the map above are the islands. Closest to Sanya are the Paracel Islands. Further east is the Macclesfield Bank and south are the Spratlys.
Sightseeing only
Islands in dispute.
The cruise tour statement is a sign that China is bolstering its claim to the territory.
Visitors won't be allowed to stay on the island. Instead, cruise-goers will eat and sleep onboard and only sightsee on the island, said Hainan deputy governor Tan Li at press conference at the annual Boao Forum for Asia over the weekend.
"We have started the planning and development of Sansha, including basic infrastructure, at full speed," Tan was quoted by state-run Xinhua News Agency (Chinese).
"Sansha's sightseeing routes, scenic spots and docking locations have been confirmed. We are hoping to begin [the cruise operation] before May 1."
Some 12 projects, including a berth for larger supply ship, freshwater supply, sewage and garbage treatment facilities are under development in Sansha.
The first phrase of Yongxing Pier has been completed and begun trial operation.
Sansha's first mayor, Xiao Jie, said last month the development and improvement of Sansha city will strengthen China's sovereignty of the islands.
Xiao said that the priority would be conservation of the natural habitat, according to the state's travel network, The Travel Channel.

Rezidor announces the Radisson Blu Hotel Port Harcourt Olympia in Nigeria

The Rezidor Hotel Group, one of the most dynamic hotel companies worldwide and a member of the Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group, announces the Radisson Blu Hotel Port Harcourt Olympia in Nigeria. The property is being developed by Cenpropsaroten Hotel Management Limited; it will feature 206 keys and is scheduled to open in Q1 2016. It brings Rezidor’s Nigerian portfolio to 1,100 rooms in operation and under development. On the African continent Rezidor now operates and develops 49 hotels with 11,000 rooms.
“Rezidor has the largest pipeline of rooms under development in sub-Saharan Africa. This signing further strengthens our leading position and underlines the importance Nigeria has for our group”, said Wolfgang M. Neumann, President & CEO at Rezidor.
The new Radisson Blu Hotel, Port Harcourt Olympia complements the existing Radisson Blu Anchorage Hotel, Lagos VI; the up and coming Radisson Blu Hotel, Abuja and the Park Inn by Radissons in Lagos, Apapa and Ikeja, Abeoukuta and Abuja. Nigeria is a key development market for Rezidor – the group is the first international operator to provide world-class hotel standards in the three major financial hubs of Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt.
The Radisson Blu hotel site is located in the southern part of the city in the less congested old Government Reserve Area directly opposite the Port Harcourt Club 1928 Golf course with spectacular views over the fairways and greens. Besides 206 guest rooms with Radisson Blu signature services such as free high speed internet access the hotel will offer an all-day dining restaurant, a specialty restaurant & bar, and the largest conference facilities within the Niger Delta, with 2,100sqm of conference and meeting space. Additionally there will be a gym, spa, outdoor swimming pool, business centre and rooftop bar & terrace.
Port Harcourt is the economic hub of the Niger Delta and the capital of Rivers State, one of Nigeria’s richest states due its large crude oil and natural gas deposits. It is home to major oil companies, banking institutions and government agencies. Hotel room supply in the city has not grown for several years, and the new built Radisson Blu business and conference hotel will benefit from being the most modern internationally branded property in the city.
